Dematerialization

Location:

Peterborough Street, City Centre

Date:

2014 October

Dematerialization was an immersive experience that linked physical space and virtual reality.

A large vertical timber corridor orientated the audience towards a screen, projecting a performance from Melbourne, Australia at one-to-one scale. Headphones and purpose made viewing glasses gave a three-dimensionality to the image and space beyond. When the projection mirrored the space inhabited by the audience, the screen became a portal into the virtual environment.
Participants stepped inside this atmospheric space for a virtual performance that explored the complex relationship between technology, architecture and the human body. It was created by Australian architects Patrick Hegarty, Madeline Sewall, and Jayden Kenny as part of Festa 2014.
